Important rules for properly functioning

  • the fence system should as far as possible be kept free of greenery, since plant growth reduces the output voltage of the energiser and increases current consumption – especially detrimental with battery powered equipment
  • optimal earthing is a prerequisite to a functional electric fence (earthing should be as deep as possible, at least 1 meter; and several earthing rods should be used; ensure a good electrical connection between the electric fencing energiser and the earthing rod)
  • do not join ropes, wide tapes or plastic cords by knotting – use suitable connections
  • fence wire may not be severed or interrupted
  • use conductor material with good conductivity, i.e. low resistance
  • aged or faulty insulators are not suitable since they lead to serious power loss; replace them with new insulators
  • ensure an optimal connection between the electric fencing energiser and the fence (use high voltage cables in the case of underground supply wires)
  • the condition of the battery in battery powered equipment must be checked regularly
  • a fencing effectiveness of at least 2 000 Volt at every point on the fence must be assured (check regularly, using a fence tester)
  • every point of the fence must measure at least 3 000 Volt in the case of hard to control animals
  • if installed and operated correctly, electric fences are totally harmless to humans and animals; this is why regular checks and maintenance of the electric fence and the electric fencing energiser and supply wires is imperative
